FP7 is the short name for the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and technological Development. This is the EU's main instrument for funding research in Europe and it will run from 2007-2013 with a budget of over 50 billion euros. FP7 is also designed to respond to Europe's employment needs, competitiveness and quality of life. |
|
Throughout FP7, SMEs will actively be encouraged to participate in all research actions. The proposed rules for Participation in FP7 specify a funding rate of 75% for research and development activities of SMEs, rather than the 50% currently applicable in FP6. This should make it more attractive for SMEs to participate in the Framework Programme by lowering their financial burden. Furthermore, the current principle of 'collective financial responsibility' is replaced in the proposal of FP7 with a guarantee fund, which would cover the financial risks of defaulting project participants. |
The objective of ICT research under the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) is to improve the competitiveness of European industry – as well as to enable Europe to master and shape the future developments of these technologies so that the demands of its society and economy are met. EU research funding is focused on seven key research Challenges as well as to Future Technologies and eInfrastrucrtures to ensure Europe becomes a world leader in ICT. Click on the links at the top of this page for brief description and participation in proposed projects.
The EU Member States have earmarked a total of € 9.1 billion for funding ICT over the duration of FP7; making it the largest research theme in the Cooperation programme, which is itself the largest specific programme of FP7 (with 64% of the total budget).
FP7 research activities will strengthen Europe’s scientific and technology base and ensure its global leadership in ICT, help drive and stimulate product, service and process innovation and creativity through ICT use and ensure that ICT progress is rapidly transformed into benefits for Europe’s citizens, businesses, industry and governments. |
